Explore and Prepare for Patong on Your First Day

Most people arrive in Patong in the afternoon, drop their bags, walk out of the hotel, and lose an hour wandering off. The town is small but dense, and the first hour of exploration almost never goes in a straight line. An hour spent getting the layout, the cash, and one decent meal sorted will save you the rest of the trip.

Patong splits into four areas

Almost everything a first-time visitor wants is in one of four places.

The beachfront runs along Thaweewong Road, with the sand on one side and a line of cafes, tour desks, and convenience stores on the other. This is where you go for a swim and a sunset, and not much else.

Bangla Road and the block around it is the nightlife strip. It closes to traffic in the evening and fills with bars, clubs, and street performers. It is loud, open or active till late, and it is recommended to see it once even if it is not your cup of tea.

The quieter southern end, down toward Malin Plaza, is where the pace softens. Fewer tour desks, smaller guesthouses on the sois, and more places to settle down without a soundtrack.

The shopping retail block. Jungceylon and the Banzaan market building are here, a short walk back from the sand, and this is where the banks, exchange counters, supermarkets, and sit-down restaurants are.

The four areas are located close together. The part worth remembering is that the mall’s main entrance is directly opposite Bangla Road, and the beach is about a five-minute walk from it. Stand at that entrance and you are roughly five minutes from everything on the list.

Sort your cash first

Thailand still runs on cash for taxis, street food, markets, and small shops. Card machines are available but are not eligible for every place or store.

Avoid getting cash for the ATM. Thai banks charge a flat fee of around 220 baht on every foreign-card withdrawal, on top of whatever your own bank adds, and that fee is the same whether you take out 2,000 baht or 20,000. Exchange counters do not charge it, and the rates are usually better than the desk in a hotel lobby. But please be aware of exchange fee that may occur at the counter.

Lion Currency Exchange have three counters inside Jungceylon, so you can find it whichever way is most convenient for you:

  • The Botanica Zone 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM
  • The Garden Zone 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM
  • The Bay Zone 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM

All three take their last queue at 9:30 PM. Also bring your passport.

While you are in the building, Phutawan on the ground floor of The Botanica Zone is a Thai bath and skincare brand worth a look, and the basement of The Jungle Zone has small independent stalls such as Kashmir Gallery and Khun Nu Crochet Home. Better souvenirs than the beach road stalls.

Where to eat in Jungceylon

Thai Food Factory, on the ground floor of The Garden Zone, is recommended for a first proper Thai meal. Nara Thai Cuisine opened on the ground floor of The Jungle Zone in September 2026 and is the calmer option if you want to sit somewhere quieter. If all you want is coffee and air conditioning, The Coffee Club is on the ground floor of The Bay Zone by the open plaza Issy Gelato is a few doors along in the same zone, or Starbucks on the ground floor of The Jungle Zone

Start your trip from the middle of town

Patong is easier when you get used to the map and the town layout. Do the cash, the meal, and the map on day one from the middle of town, and the rest of the week is yours to spend. Jungceylon is open daily from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM, directly opposite Bangla Road and about five minutes’ walk from the beach.
