It can be involuntary, such as when you breathe in dust or have chest congestion. It can also be voluntary, like when you’re trying to get rid of an irritating tickle or bubble in your throat. Though it can be annoying if it doesn’t seem to be serving its purpose or you’ve been coughing for several days with no relief, it’s generally a natural part of life.

If you taste blood when you cough, though, that can be scary. The good news is that it doesn’t necessarily mean something is seriously wrong. Take a look at some of the reasons why you might be tasting blood when coughing.

Mistaken Identity

Let’s start with the simplest, and most reassuring, possibility. It could be that you’re actually tasting mucus or phlegm rather than blood. They have similar salty, sour, metallic tastes, so it’s easy to mistake one for the other. If you’ve been dealing with nasal or chest congestion and you get a metallic taste in your mouth when you cough, it may just be your body expelling mucus or phlegm.

Irritation in the Throat or Airways

If you’ve had a serious cough for several days, the repeated force is placing excess pressure on your throat and airways. That can cause tiny blood vessels to rupture. When that happens, they may leak small amounts of blood that mix with your mucus or saliva. Breathing in extremely dry air can have the same effect. This is nothing to be concerned about. The taste of blood may be strong, but there are only trace amounts of it.

Sinus Infections

Sinus infections can also cause people to taste blood when they cough. If your nasal passages are infected or inflamed, they may bleed a bit. That blood can drip down your throat, and when you cough, you’ll taste it. Colds and allergies can have the same impact. These usually aren’t serious, but if you have a sinus infection, you may need antibiotics to clear it up.

Respiratory Infections

Infections in your lungs can cause inflammation and minor bleeding as well due to both the infection itself and the force of coughing. Bronchitis and pneumonia are common examples of respiratory infections. Bronchitis often clears up on its own, but pneumonia requires medical care. If you’re having painful coughing fits, visibly coughing up blood, running a fever, or having trouble breathing, you should seek medical attention.

Smoking and Vaping

Smoking and vaping can irritate the airways. That irritation may be bad enough to cause bleeding though it should be minor. If you’re trying to quit smoking, you may cough more for a time. That’s because your lungs are healing and trying to get rid of mucus and other buildup. It’s not uncommon to taste blood during that process.

More Serious Conditions

In some cases, tasting blood when coughing can be a sign of more serious health issues. Those might include tuberculosis, pulmonary embolism, or lung cancer. These conditions typically come with additional symptoms, such as unexplained weight loss, chest pain, and severe fatigue. They’re more unlikely than the other issues mentioned here, but if you’re experiencing these symptoms, don’t ignore them.

All Things Considered

Coughing is a natural way to clear out your airways, and it’s not uncommon to taste blood at times. In most cases, it’s nothing to worry about. If you’re visibly coughing up blood, having trouble breathing, or experiencing other serious symptoms, though, you need to seek medical care right away.

Coughing is the body’s way of getting rid of something that shouldn’t be in your throat or lungs.
